“If you’re really interested in a certain subject, it will definitely help expand your knowledge of that subject,” said senior Jonathan Card. Academic Super Bowl isn’t about trivia. The competition consists of tough questions, based on a theme and focusing on material not normally covered in high school curriculum. This year’s theme is the French Revolution. Students in all the disciplines, including math and science, will face off on questions surrounding that theme.

For instance, the math questions will pertain to mathematicians from the French Revolution era and their accomplishments, as well as types of math, such as analytical geometry, which was invented by Frenchmen Rene Descartes and Pierre de Fermet. The English study guide simply lists Charles Dickens’ novel “A Tale of Two Cities” and three poems to study for the competition. Yes, they’re tough topics. Jonathan is captain of the science team and in his third year with Academic Super Bowl.

Michael's Catholic School graduate also is on Student Council and the Robotics, Debate and Chess clubs at Scecina and plays for the Crusaders boys tennis team. He's also a member of National Honor Society and Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society. He likes the competitive challenge of the Academic Super Bowl’s college-level questions. “It’s a good competitive environment,” Jonathan said.

“It’s meant to be information that you would not get in any class at Scecina.” “I think it’s really fun,” adds Jonathan, who said he practices with the others for about an hour a week and also at home with the provided study guide and questions. Academic Super Bowl is organized through the Indiana Association of School Principals. Each school creates teams of up to three students who work cooperatively to answer multiple choice questions based on a study guide. Scecina teacher Sarah Smith is the head coach of Scecina’s team and also leads science and math teams. Other team leaders are English teacher Jesse Purvis (English); math teacher Elizabeth Williams (math) and Director of Enrollment Management Kelsey Greiner (social studies). This year, Mrs.

Smith said, 17 students are in the group. They will compete in two competitions, the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship and in the local part of the statewide competition. Interdisciplinary Purchasing Practice Questions IASP will continue to publish practice questions on this web site, which are free, and written by the same question writers as the competition questions. However, many coaches have requested information on how to purchase additional practice questions.

The Lowell Academic Booster Club has taken on this project, and will sell sets of practice questions (approximately 1,000 junior level questions, and 1,500 senior level for $40 per set). The sets will include questions from each subject except for math. While these questions are not created by the same writers as the competition questions, we believe many coaches may be interested in using these as a tool for their team. Study

The interdisciplinary squad may consist of seven students. Any given student may compete on a maximum of two subject area squads and may also compete on the interdisciplinary squad (three squads total). Eligibility Any student enrolled full-time in grades 9-12 is eligible to compete on a high school team. Any full-time student in grades 7 and 8 is eligible to compete on a junior division team. Sixth grade students may participate if they are housed in the same building with the 7th and 8th graders as a middle school.

Ninth graders housed in a middle school must either compete with the team from the high school which they will attend or they may compose a team of their own and compete in the high school division. Within these constraints, schools may select their teams in any manner and with any additional criteria they choose.
